Excel 2007: Remove dashes from a set of numbers such as a social security number or phone number

Problem:

We have a large list of social security numbers or phone numbers with dashes in Excel. Need to remove the dashes for submitting the document to something such as the SSNVS.

Imagine you have a list of telephone numbers in Excel such as

123-456-7890
234-567-8901
345-678-9012

Solution:

Highlight the list, on the Home tab, click Find & Select, Replace, type in – in Find and nothing (leave it blank) in Replace. Click Find All to show all items that it will remove the dash for and then Replace All to perform the function. Voila! All of the dashes are removed.

Note: You may want to change the cell type to something other than General or any leading zeros may go away.

This was, you don’t have to worry about using the Data, Text-to-columns function and using delimited fields.
